Best Car for Taxi Work in the UK: What Drivers Around Reading Actually Run

Yellow taxi estate car working on a UK high street

Taxi work is the hardest life a car can live. Stop-start town driving all day, doors slammed a hundred times a shift, passengers who treat the back seat like a skip — and every day off the road is a day earning nothing. So the best car for taxi work isn't the nicest car. It's the one that keeps earning: economical, roomy, easy to fix, and cheap to buy in the first place so the maths works.

A practical note before the cars. Licensing rules sit with your local council, and they differ — vehicle age limits, emissions standards and inspection schedules vary between areas, and some councils won't plate a car over a certain age at first licensing. If you're around here, that's Reading Borough Council (and neighbouring West Berkshire and Wokingham have their own rules). Check the current conditions before you buy anything. It takes one phone call and can save you from owning a car you can't earn from.

Volkswagen Passat estate — the trade's worst-kept secret

There's a reason you see so many Passats on the ranks. The 2.0 TDI is good for well past 250,000 miles if the oil stays fresh, the DSG automatic suits town work perfectly, and the estate boot takes airport luggage without a fight. Fuel economy in the high 40s is realistic on mixed work. Our 2010 Passat 2.0 TDI DSG estate at £1,795 is exactly the shape of thing drivers buy: not new, not pretty, ready to earn from day one.

Skoda Octavia — the thinking driver's default

Ask a room of private hire drivers what they'd buy with their own money and the Octavia wins more often than not. Same VW mechanicals as the Passat, a hatchback boot that's bigger than most estates, and rear legroom your passengers will genuinely notice. The Greenline diesel sips fuel on long runs. We have a 2011 Octavia Greenline at £3,200 at the moment — the sort of car that does five years of school contracts without breaking a sweat.

Ford Mondeo estate — comfort for the long fares

If your work includes airport runs and motorway miles, the Mondeo still takes beating. It rides better than the Passat, the seats survive long shifts, and the 2.0 TDCi automatic is a relaxed combination. This 2013 Mondeo Titanium X estate at £3,395 is top-spec — leather, navigation, the lot — which matters when executive work pays better than the school run.

Need seven seats? Galaxy first, Zafira for value

Six-passenger work needs a proper seven-seater, not a five-seater with two chairs in the boot. The Ford Galaxy at £2,750 is the grown-up answer: seven adult seats and doors that slide in tight car parks. On a tighter budget, the Vauxhall Zafira at £975 gets you plated and earning for under a grand, as long as your council's age rules allow it — again, check first.

What kills taxi cars (and how to spot it before you buy)

Gearboxes and clutches die first in town work, so any slipping, juddering or lazy changes on the test drive means walk away. Diesel particulate filters clog on short-hop work — a car that only ever did school runs may need an expensive clean or replacement, so ask how it was used and take it for a proper run. Suspension takes a beating from speed humps with a full load; knocks over bumps mean arms and bushes are due. And check the rear doors, locks and seat belts like a licensing officer would, because one will.

We keep the sort of stock drivers buy — diesel estates, autos and seven-seaters — at Burghfield Farm, Reading. See the current stock, or call 07578 025837 and tell us it's for the trade; we'll point you at the cars we'd run ourselves and steer you off the ones we wouldn't.
